Where Does the Word ¡°Hu¡± Derive From? Shanghai, one of China¡¯s four municipalities directly under the central government, is located in the east of the rich and beautiful Yangtse Delta, where the surging Yangtse River flows into the East Sea. With an area of 5800 square kilometers, it is one of the world¡¯s biggest port cities and the center of modern science, technology and culture of the country as well. In the year Xining 7th (ÎõÄþÆßÄê,1074&a mp;#196;ê) of the Song Dynasty,. it became Shanghai Town. (ÉÏº£Õò) and from then on both Chinese and foreign merchantmen were sailing to and fro in this area. In 1292, Shanghai was re-established as a county. In the early 16th century, Shanghai was the most important textile center of the country. In the 17th century, it developed into a big port city in the southeast of China with its flourishing coastal trade and a population of 200 thousand people.
