Three thousand years ago, Taibo, the eldest son of the Emperor Zhouwu in the West Zhou Dynasty came here, set up the State of Gouwu and created the Wu culture. Wuxi,a sparkling pearl of the Taihu Lake , is situated in the southern part of Jiangsu Province and in the middle of the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway. It is 128km away from Shanghai with Suzhou in between and 183km away from Nanjing with Changzhou in between. With the Taihu lake in the south and the south and the Yangtze River in the north, it borders Zhejiang Province and has bank of 35km along the Yangtze. Wuxi is a famous city with a long history in southern china. As early as 3000 years ago (end of 11th century BC ), in order to give the throne to his brother Jili, Taibo, the eldest son of the Emperor Zhouwu in the northern tribe, came here from Shaanxi together with his younger brother Zhongyong and set up the State of Gouwu (now Meicun Town of Xishan city ).By leading the local people to engage in water conservancy, agricultural and sericultural production, Taibo promoted the combination of central and southern Chinese culture and created the Wu Culture. In the 5th year of West Han Dynasty (202BC), Wuxi County was formally established. The name of Wuxi, literarily meaning ¡∼no tin ¡㊣, was given due to the extinguishing resource of tin of the Tin Hill. The City of Wuxi was set up in 1949. The landscape of the city embodies the beauty of the Yangtze, the Grand Canal, the Taihu Lake, fountains, caves and gardens and is characteristic of the unique features of a water village in southern China. Wuxi takes over the most beautiful corner of the Taihu Lake and on the shore of the that Lake scatter famous parks such as Turtle-head Peninsula Park, Lee Garden, Plun Garden and Xihui Park. Humanitarian and historical relics wellknown at home and abroad are all located in the whole city. To name only a few, they are the Donglin College, Native House of Zhang Wentian, Native House of Xu Xiake, Huangshen Fort, Taibo Temple, Taibo Tomb and Memorial House of Xu Beihong, etc. In recent years, the Wuxi National Tourist Resort Zone at Mashan has completed a few large sightseeing and amusement projects such as the International Angling Center, the Moon-bay Vacational Village and the Linshan Scenic Spot. The Wuxi Taihu Film & Television City has built the theme parks such as ¡∼City of Europe¡㊣, ¡∼City of Tang Dynasty¡㊣, ¡∼City of Three Kingdoms¡㊣ and ¡∼City of Water Margin¡㊣. In the past few years, Wuxi is evaluated as one of China¡¯s ten major tourist cities, and early this year, it is listed in the first group as one of ¡∼ China¡¯s Excellent Tourist Cities¡㊣ by the National Tourism Administration. The dawn of the new Millenium has set in and Wuxi-¡∼the Glistening Pearl of Taihu Lake¡㊣ will shine even brighter than ever. Dear International Living Reader, China's two largest cities, Beijing and Shanghai, garner most of the attention for tourism and trade in China's mainland, while little-known Wuxi, set between the two, remains virtually unknown to the outside world. Located in the Jiangsu Province, on the southeast coast, Wuxi is among the oldest cities in China, with origins dating back to the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220). It's a dynamic place, combining a natural landscape and age-old culture with plenty of urban attractions. Here, you'll experience a version of big-city life on a miniature scale that's far more digestible--and dare I suggest, inhalable--than its massive, overcrowded sister-cities Beijing (to the north) and Shanghai (to the south). Fabulous indoor shopping malls and charming boutique shops line the street along the renowned Zhongshan Road--Wuxi's equivalent to Main Street--where you'll find fine dining, upscale hotels, highrises, and local merchants peddling everything from beverages to skewered beef. At night, the skyline glistens with sparkling lights, while the streets magically clear to an unexpected calm. Foreign investment and tourism are slower to develop here than in the bigger cities, and finding people who speak English outside of the hotels is not a foregone conclusion (though you will see the occasional American-style fast food joint or Western-style restaurant). Full meals to feed a family of four, at splendidly decorated traditional Chinese restaurants with welcoming hostesses, cost as little as $30--and you'll be spared the "Americanized" versions of Chinese cuisine! For its relative quaintness and value, Wuxi is a pleasant and affordable surprise for travelers to China. It's well worth a weekend visit on your way to or from the bigger destinations. You can get to Wuxi in 90 minutes by train from Shanghai (for about $10), or by a slightly longer flight from Beijing (for about $100 including taxes). Upon arriving at Wuxi's tiny airport, there are a number of waiting taxis and a community bus that will get you into the city center in 15 minutes for 10 Yuan ($1.20). Once there, taxis are abundant and can get you to almost anyplace within city limits for 10 to 20 Yuan ($1.20 to $2.40). Since most drivers don't speak English, it helps to have either a working knowledge of Chinese or a printed document naming your destination. Vinnie Apicella For International Living Chinese Version ÖÐÎÄ∼æ ¡¡Exchange&Cooperation In order to study the advanced vocational education concepts and elevate the education level, the institute keeps on communicating and cooperating with international institutions. Members of industries, vocational education institutions and community colleges coming from America, Germany, Australia£¬Japan, HK and Taiwan have had many intercommunions and negotiations with the institute. The institute employs foreign teachers and invites experts to teach or give lectures to the students, widening students view and mind as well as improving the communication ability of foreign languages. Every year, some teachers are selected to go abroad or go to Hong Kong and Macao to study, investigate or receive training projects. In 2003, WXIT became the member institute of "Community Colleges for International Development" (CCID). In 2005, WXIT started the joint-education program of "International Business (Global Marketing)" with TAFE Southwestern Sydney Institute, Australia. August 21, 2007, (05+03):20 PM, ; |

Where Does the Word ¡∼Hu¡㊣ Derive From? Shanghai, one of China¡¯s four municipalities directly under the central government, is located in the east of the rich and beautiful Yangtse Delta, where the surging Yangtse River flows into the East Sea. With an area of 5800 square kilometers, it is one of the world¡¯s biggest port cities and the center of modern science, technology and culture of the country as well. Shanghai has gone through a long evolution from a coastal fishing village into a great modern city.. By the years of 2000 to 3000 B.C., land had taken shape in the western part of Shanghai and coastal fishing villages had formed at the lower reach of Wu Song River near the sea, where fishermen planted in the rivers a kind of bamboo paling called ¡∼Hu 足豕¡㊣ as fishing gear to catch fishes and crabs. The lower reach of Song River (now called Wu Song River) was once named as ¡∼Hu Du 足豕ä¡㊣£¬then ¡∼Hu 足豕¡㊣ evolved into ¡∼Hu »¦¡㊣, hence Shanghai was called ¡∼Hu »¦¡㊣ for short. Earthed cultural relics indicate that as early as 5000 to 6000 years ago, human beings began to labor, live and multiply on this land. The earliest residents engaged in fishing, livestock breeding and hunting, then developed their farming, and finally set up their rural community, which extended eastwards as new shoals arose. During the Warring States (475 “C 221 B.C.), Shanghai area was reigned by the Kingdom Chu (³þ the feud of Prince Huangxie, who was then called Sir Chun Shen (´ºÉ那). It was said that Huangxie dredged up Huangpu River, so the river was also named Chun Shen River (´ºÉ那½ for Shanghai is ¡∼Chun Shen £“´ºÉ那£©¡㊣ or ¡∼Shen £“É那£©¡㊣ for short. In Tang Dynasty, Shanghai had been a coastal fishing village until the year Tianbao 10th (Ì足㊣¦Ê®Ä那£¬751 Ä那) it was set up as Huating county (»ªÍ∟ÏØ (ÎõÄþÆßÄ那,1074&a mp;#196;那) of the Song Dynasty,. it became Shanghai Town. (ÉϺ£Õ辰) and from then on both Chinese and foreign merchantmen were sailing to and fro in this area. In 1292, Shanghai was re-established as a county. In the early 16th century, Shanghai was the most important textile center of the country. In the 17th century, it developed into a big port city in the southeast of China with its flourishing coastal trade and a population of 200 thousand people. In the middle of 19th century, Shanghai presented an unprecedented prosperity, enjoying the fame of ¡∼a great port connecting rivers and seas, a metropolitan outstanding in the southeastern China¡㊣. After the Opium War, Shanghai became the objective of plunder by the world¡¯s big powers and was soon reduced to ¡∼a paradise of adventurers¡㊣ and ¡∼the eastern Paris¡㊣, with its deformed development of economy and culture. Owing to its long history of 6000 years, Shanghai has scores of places of historic interest and parks of different sizes, of which the famous ones are Yu Garden, Jade Temple, Long Hua Park, and Gu Ji Garden. They have made great Shanghai more graceful and charming. Shanghai is the birthplace of the Chinese Communist Party. The Residence of the Party¡¯s First Congress is visited each year by hundreds of thousands of people. In addition, there are Zhou Enlai¡¯s Residence, Sun Yatxien¡¯s Residence, the Lu Xun Museum, Lu Xun¡¯s Tomb and other revolutionary historic places to be held in respect by visitors. In modern history, Shanghai witnessed the Sword Uprising, May the 30th Movement, the Shanghai Workers¡¯ Three Times¡¯ Armed Struggles and the Songhu Resistance-War Against Japan. These historic events have been recorded as important chapters in the Chinese history. In China today, Shanghai has become important centers of industry, science, technology and commerce. Its excellent geographical location makes it easy to travel from here to other parts of the country and the world. By liners sailing on the Huangpu River and Wusong River, people can reach various places along the Yangtse Valley. Its huge harbors provide handy transportation to foreign countries. Arterial railways such as Beijing“CShanghai and Shanghai“CHangzhou links the north and the south of the nation. With a thick highway net, travelers can go to nearly every city of the country. Over 40 air liners take passengers to big cities at home and abroad. Shanghai has developed an advanced national and international communication and one-third of international communication is transmitted via Shanghai Satellite Communication Ground Station and the Sino-Japanese Submarine Cable. In April of 1986, Shanghai was announced by the State Council as one of the famous historic cities of the country.
