A few weeks ago, when there were media reports on how ’s bail being denied reduced Karunanidhi to tears, my first reaction was that this entire saga was pregnant with the script of a bollywood potboiler. An ailing father with multiple wives, good for nothing sons staking a claim to the empire, a nephew or two, a poor little rich daughter who takes it on the chin in the name of family izzat, poetry emanating from the dark dungeons of , tears, allegations, court-rooms, a suave fixer (poor man’s Cleopatra?) running circles around powerful men, denials, suicides, political vendetta from the other main dominating force in TN ..blockbuster stuff. How much more dysfunctionality does one want in a movie, after all? I waited in anticipation for the ever-so- original Mahesh Bhatt to pick this one up. Hell, Anu MaLLik (double A or double L, what’s the fad these days short boots short boots ?), who never plagiarizes anything from anywhere, could provide the score. Seriously!Babu Babu/ReutersVery soon, my conscience-meter started registering obscenely high readings aam aadmi and aurat do not usually dance on other people’s political graves and should not enjoy someone else’s family trauma. Human values! So there I was now, perched helplessly atop the proverbial Ivory Tower, a bumbling, sensitive idiot carrying the immense burden of virtues like forgiveness towards scheming old manipulators (and their innocent little daughters) who appeared to have been reduced to ordinary mortals. Suddenly susceptible to emotions like pain, repentance, and a sense of helplessness which they had thought would never touch them. (such weak stuff is for the voters, not those who get voted!) On balance, I was confused, as you can probably make out. What was the right response? Which was morally correct? Politically correct party dresses for women party dresses for women ? Or should I have just yielded to my baser instincts and mock the predicament of thalaivar and family from a safe distance? And now, after the Supreme Court also turned down s plea for bail, it seems that thalaivar broke down again, and thalapathi was consoling him as best as he could. Or so they say!But somehow, the dilemma I faced when the tear-drops headed south on the last occasion, is absent this time around. They have finally reduced me -the common citizen of this nation- to a cynical, monstrous , voyeuristic, heartless and cruel denizen of their constituency. I am hoping I will not develop a conscience, nor will I succumb to sudden bouts of morality and humanity……This time around, my heart goes out to this paragon of virtue and honesty, this epitome of meritocracy, replica Patek Philippe watches this…. this… (words fail me as I am reduced to a weepy wreck) .this most unfairly treated poor little old man, victimized and persecuted for committing the cardinal sin of upholding the very morals , cheap homecoming dress cheap homecoming dress which convince the believers that God created man in his own image. My very soul cries each time i think about how thalaivar put state, citizen and nation before family . Sacrificing the financial interests of his very small non-extended family .because he was elected to serve the poor Indians, on whom he showered his magnanimity -they now watch television on empty bellies.
