We’re usually moderately active people, but winter hibernation and general inactivity had left us with an achey back and knees. So we headed to Body & Soul medical clinics to see what a dose of acupuncture could do for us. We’d tried it once long ago, and the practitioner’s talk about blocked energies flew right over our heads then. This time, the clinic’s Dr. Liu and her capable translator / fellow doctor Henry put us at ease with their professional manner and physiology-based questions.

They gave us a thorough consultation and asked about our lifestyle, recent activities and explored possible causes for our complaints. Henry is a Chinese guy who grew up in Canada and his ease with the English language is a godsend for expats who have a lot of questions about acupuncture in general and the treatment to be performed. Dr. Liu then proceeded to stick sterile needles into our problem zones, and leave us resting with a heating lamp focused on the treatment areas. There was some mild muscle discomfort but no sharp pains (we were told that sharp pain is a sign things were being done incorrectly) and they followed with cupping. The one hour session goes for RMB600 altogether. We left feeling relaxed and haven’t felt our back twinge since then.
