Dec. 3, 2009 (China Knowledge) - An inauguration ceremony for Beijing Yizhuang Mobile Valley Co was held yesterday in Beijing Economic-technological Development Area, or BDA.
The establishment of Beijing Yizhuang Mobile Valley is the first step in BDA's plan to build an RMB 100-bilion mobile telecom industry base in the area. Previously, in May 2000, BDA inaugurated Xingwang (International) Industrial Park, a world-class high-tech industrial park.
In addition, BDA yesterday signed agreements with about 20 enterprises, which will invest about RMB 4 billion in Mobile Valley. The enterprises include Jingxin Shiji (Beijing) Semiconductor Technology Co and Techfaith Wireless Technology Ltd.
The mobile telecom industry base will comprise research and development centers, office buildings and a trading platform and is expected to be completed in 2014. The base aims to attract a total of RMB 30 billion in investment and to realize RMB 100 billion in sales revenue in five years.
The new base will focus on the development and design of core chips and supporting chips for wireless communications. The base will also attract enterprises such as wireless communication terminal solution providers and software and operating system companies to form a complete industry chain.
Statistics showed that the world's cell phone shipments totaled 1.1 billion to 1.2 billion units in 2008 and that China's cell phone shipments accounted for 50% of the total. Last year, enterprises in Beijing, the city where China's top three telecom operators have their headquarters, produced 210 million cell phones, or 37.5% of the country's total, and reaped RMB 157.4 billion in sales revenue.
The total cell phone output in BDA, which houses Nokia's new China headquarters, exceeded RMB 135 billion last year.
