Nov. 26, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China will increase its spending on environmental protection in the 12th five-year plan, and the total investment is expected to reach RMB 3.1 trillion during the five-year period from 2011 to 2015, according to Liu Zhiquan, vice director with the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

Investment in the construction of pollution control facilities will amount to RMB 1 trillion, said Liu, adding that China's environmental investment will soon exceed that of the U.S. and Japan.

In the 12th five-year plan, the environmental protection sector will be the new engine for China's economic growth. Industries related to the environmental protection will maintain an average annual growth of 15% to 20%, and the combined output value will reach RMB 4.92 trillion.

It is estimated that China's investment in environmental protection will hit RMB 1.4 trillion during the 2006-2010 period under the 11th five-year plan, accounting for 1.5% of the country's GDP. Investment in the eight key environmental protection projects will reach RMB 333.6 billion at the end of 2010, while that in the 10 key energy-saving projects is estimated to total RMB 15 billion.
